The sequel tries to tonally retread the first film, but it feels forced. Also forced is the movie's attempt to give each character an emotional moment, and two thirds of the way into the film, it's just a parade of these scenes that would achieve more emotional resonance if it didn't feel so schematic. This is more of a comedy than a drama or action movie and for a good while, it's just a joke telling machine with a plot meandering without much direction. It is funny, quite funny, but the movie goes out of its way to say the action scenes are besides the point. The opening fight occurs in the background of Baby Groot jokes and so does another. The only good action sequence is Rocket taking on the Ravagers. The ending is so sentimental, the movie only gets away with it by being a comedy. Despite being the main focus, Peter Quill's relationship with his father, Ego, is all exposition and never that interesting. The character that actually gains a lot of depth is Nebula. Sylvester Stallone's cameo is terrible. Stan Lee's cameo is great.

I agree with some of this, but think it is a bit harsh. The movie is pretty enjoyable. I think some of the things you are mentioning, sentimental scenes, are what I am getting at with the movie dragging.

Some of them worked better than others, like the Gamora and Nebula. Yondu and Quill worked alright too. They did overdo it a bit with that sort of stuff and I agree with that.

That said, I loved the opening title sequence with baby Groot. As it was the opposite of what one would expect from something like this.

I do agree that it was a fair bit of the same general theme. But it was a good time with likable characters. And I found the story to be pretty good. The last fight was pretty fun to watch and the Rocket and the RAvengers was good.

The first movie did give all, or at least most, of the characters their dramatic moments. Or at least heartfelt moments as well, but it did not feel as heavy handed. I do not think this was as good as the first film, which is one of my favorite Marvel films, but it was still quite enjoyable and fun.

The Stan Lee cameo was great and unexpected. I did not think Marvel had the movie rights to the Watchers.
