This movie was more about two supporting characters than it was about the Guardians themselves: Yondu and Nebula.
In that awesome scene where Yondu and Rocket take out a ship's worth of scavengers, Rocket was just "also there." It was Yondu's scene. Even perfectly punctuated with the lyrics "Come a little bit closer, you're my kind of man, so big and so strong" - as he effortlessly whistled his way through the whole crew. Even the big emotional climax was all about Yondu. But in the end, Yondu was there to be the Agent Coulson of the Guardians - the death that pulls them all together. It is all getting a little formulaic.
Then there's Nebula. In that scene where she had attacked Gamora in a ship and was stuck in the rubble, I was cheering for Nebula. When Gamora pulled out the huge gun and started firing at the trapped Nebula, I thought "this seems so unfair." The reason I thought it is that the movie (both movies) had given me more reason to care about Nebula than about Gamora. Presumably Nebula was there to give Gamora character development, but it felt more like Gamora was only there to be a foil to Nebula.
Also have to give it to Kurt Russell. He ran rings around Chris Pratt with superior acting.
"This is how democracy dies. With thunderous applause."
