Quote:The Surfer is one of my favorites, and I sort of grew up reading his books and his comics. I remember starting with the Steve Englehart run. But I don't really think that the Surfer has many (If at all.) standout classic stories or comics the same way that Batman, Spider-Man or The X-Men do.
Yes, he does. Maybe not quite as many, but his best stories are just as good.
Quote:I really liked the Englehart run at the time that I read it (I think that I started with #15.), and I consider him and Starlin to be more or less the architects of the cosmic characters. Sadly, it doesn't seem that most of those cosmic characters are used now, it seems to mostly be about Thanos and Galactus. I also liked the Ron Marz run (I read most of it.), but again, I don't think that there are any standout issues or classics. I guess that Starlin's Thanos arc would be a classic. I also really dug the Dematties run, but it seems like not many other people did.
This explains why you don't think he has as many great stories - because these, with one exception, aren't the Surfer's best stories. You came in with Englehart only after his best story arc.
Quote:I know that the Dan Slott run has been widely acclaimed, but it's too soon to tell if it will be classic.
Not a classic, but it did have some excellent stories. The last two issues in particular are worth catching up with.
So the best Silver Surfer stories in my opinion are:
Fantastic Four #48-50: the first appearance of Silver Surfer and Galactus
Silver Surfer #3, Vol. 1: Silver Surfer vs. Mephisto (in his first appearance)
Silver Surfer #4, Vol. 1: Silver Surfer vs. Thor
Silver Surfer #5, Vol. 1: Silver Surfer vs. the Stranger
Silver Surfer #6, Vol. 1: Silver Surfer vs. the Overlord
Silver Surfer #1, Vol. 2: Stan Lee/John Byrne one shot with Silver Surfer vs. Mephisto
Fantastic Four #259-260: Silver Surfer and Fantastic Four vs. Terrax and Dr. Doom
Silver Surfer #3-10, Vol. 3: Silver Surfer vs. the Elders of the Universe
Silver Surfer #69-75, Vol. 3: the Heralds of Galactus vs. Morg
Silver Surfer #13-14, Vol. 8: the fate of Dawn Greenwood
