    what was Kevin Smith thinking!?

That's a good question. I wonder that, myself ...
Mysterio is one of the Sinister Six.
So killing him in a DD book is pointless, since he will come back in a Spider-Man book very quickly ...

Actually, he was. Mysterio planned everything. He got everything that he needed from the Kingpin. He had Bullseye working for him.

No, Mysterio has more than one trick up his sleeve.

For example, he has used a spider-sense jammer since ASM #13 (1964)

He also has used hallucinogenic gas in the past and he always adapts his tactics to his target.

... And it was the whole point of the story. Nobody would have guessed that Mysterio was the mystery villain ...

Still, I don't like that one of my favorite villains was killed like that. Among villains, I don't think that Mysterio has suicidal tendencies. It doesn't fit the character.

Then, Kevin Smith tried to replace Quentin Beck with a minor villain (Francis Klum) that he had created ...

Mysterio is only on the greatest DD villains lists because Karen Page died in the same story (even though Bullseye is co-responsible for her death).

But I agree with you. He is more a Spider villain than a DD villain.
