I'm just wondering about this. Most people seem to be disappointed in the movies that DC does (Green Lantern, Batman versus Superman, Suicide Squad.), but people really enjoy and like the shows (Gotham, The Flash, Supergirl seems to be the most popular.). I'm just wondering why they seem to be doing so much better in the shows. Maybe they should just stick to the shows. Personally, I enjoyed the Green Lantern movie, and I LOVE the Batman films (Batman Versus Superman had some good stuff, the problem was that it was too long and too jumbled. They could have kept it JUST between Batman and Superman too.). Man Of Steel had some good bits too, him killing Zod just ruined it for me. I do NOT think that the Wonder Woman movie will be good, and I am excited for the Justice League movie (And I've been waiting a long time.). Gotham is a great show.

Maybe DC needs to take a cue from the Marvel movies and add some humor (Ala the Avengers and the Guardians Of The Galaxy movies.). That MIGHT be why people gravitate more towards the Marvel movies.

I think it has to do with the most successful characters of both studios: Iron Man and Batman.

All the Marvel movies have borrowed from Iron Man's tone, which is basically lite and funny with an undertone of relatable pain. It's worked so far, because Thor, Cap, and the Avengers all lend themselves to that formula nicely.

The DC movies have borrowed from Batman's tone, which is extremely dark and tortured. That tone doesn't lend itself to all the other DC characters. Superman done in the tone of Batman isn't Superman. Yet because Batman is their most successful character by a measure of many millions of dollars, they feel the need to make the other characters planets in Batman's orbit.

TV is different. There's not a need to make all the TV shows thematically one thing. Flash doesn't need to match the tone of Arrow or Supergirl or Legends, because crossovers between the four are rare and not defining.
