Perfect first impression!
Wow. This issue puts the names in namedropping! And longtime readers can appreciate the cleverly colorful connotation of descripts instead of the actual obvious iconic names. See here for list: http://dc.wikia.com/wiki/Dark_Days:_The_Casting_Vol_1_1
This sort of read like the History of the DC Universe after COIE - only this time all new untold happenings that is now new canon for the Rebirth Timeline! And heavy on Hawkman mythos. With what seems signs of Shazam foreshadowing.
The issue numbering sux. Cheap gimmick instead of a solid serial sequencing. And it really is mostly throwing the names into the story ring all revolving how each iconic character is involved with the DC Universe altering Nth Metal. Every big name but Superman's and perhaps a bit to conveniently interconnected. Also it was... conincidentally, easypeasy, bothersome how Nth Metal was the saving grace to regenerate
Joker and the Batman from their still canon pre-Convergence (near)deaths.
Joker and Batman more or less remain the leads and that's probably the big strike against the believability. Joker all knowing and tied into the Cosmic Fate. Batman wielding a magic Sunsword and becoming the progenitor of the clearly gimmick driven evil
Cosmic Dark Knights. Should Joker and Batma be really synonymous with Cosmic??? The art is not epic but it is better than average. Talia and Duke as the main players wouldn't be my first choice to draw in readers but maybe they'll gain fan favor from this. Otherwise, since this IS. THE. NEW. CANON. it is an important Event in concept if only to establish the status quo dynamics of all the big names.
