I sympathise and partially agree. Personally I feel the problem with Multiverse story's, in comics today especially, is that they are seen and used in nihilistic terms. Never allowed to develop naturally and be explored and expanded upon over a lengthy period of time as the easiest way to generate attention and sales is by mass destruction and war.
James Robinson's Earth-2 reimagining was initially one of the finest efforts to realise and develop a convincing new world that could actually stand on its own, yet acted still as a mirror to the regular earth. Yet despite the historical success and longevity of the original Earth-2/Multiverse concept the will to develop and protect this exciting new take on the Earth-2 canon, and for that matter Earth-3, was never a seriously considered prospect...
There have been many a good alternate earth story over the last three decades at DC and Marvel, but when the ingrained attitude is that these places and characters are there for cannon fodder and disposable the concept becomes hard to invest any of ones time and interest in. Dark Nights here is about the best example of this nihilistic view as is possible to find.
