Then again most old fans only complain these days.

The entirety of METAL is all about Hawkman and his relationship to the DCU. If you didn't get this tie in, it's probably because you haven't been following up. But to catch you up: Carter Hall is one of the premiere archeologists in the DCU. Batman has been following him, trying to figure out what Nth Metal does and Batman tries to follow him to where Carter currently resides...deep within the Dark Multiverse where Dreams are important. Nth Metal is tied to dreams and memory, with Dreaming being the buffer between the Dark Multiverse and the current 52. Daniel the Sandman himself is the grandson of Carter Hall, so he's trying to inform Carter through dreams on what he should do next.

But on top of that, the Dark Multiverse version of Hawkman has taken him over and puts him at the forge that creates the Nth Metal that connects the multiverse and him to his memories.

This is the creature that members of the JL confront at the end of Metal 4. This story explains why Carter is at this moment trying to kill his friends.
