    I thought The Thing's helmet was due to the damage to his face by Wolverine's adamantine claws? It was supposed because Ben felt he was even more horrific than ever and wanted to hide his scarred face - and I suspect also to prevent further damage so it could heal.

That's the in-story reason. I'm looking for the meta reason. Why did the writer choose to go down this path?
