I think it's a testament to the FF and its grand imagination that merely having to keep its stars in the same universe most of the time (not all of the time) seems constricting.

Incidentally, the retcon says nothing about time, only space. While it does seem plausible that the cosmic connection is limited by the barriers between time lines, we nevertheless don't actually know that to be the case.
