Another theory is that Reverse Flash is tormenting Barry to get Barry to man up as it were and become the hero that the future will need.

Every hero needs a villain. especially a villain that knows the hero enough to screw with their head as well as launch evil schemes.

This is possible, though given Wells' cold blooded murder of Simon Stagg and the Reverse-Flash's equally evil act to those two Mercury Labs security guards one should be careful when thinking Wells is some "hard but kind" samaritan.
The building up of Wells over the series thus far is obviously not that of trustworthy guardian angel, he uses people as chess pieces and will kill anyone who poses a significant obstacle to him. That he is orchestrating much of what has occured for all these episodes is just one more pointer to his sinister controlling nature.
