That didn't bother me too much as I could easily buy that he doesn't remember the act of falling unconscious. When I went in for surgery and was put under, one moment I was counting backwards and then I was groggily coming out of it. I don't remember getting more sluggish or feeling sleepy, it felt sudden. So, I can buy Stein trusting Wells' account and that he doesn't have recollection of being shot with a powerful knock-out dart, that he lost some minutes of memory before complete unconsciousness.
The question that should be asked by the others was how did Eiling get that far in without raising any kind of alarm? A research facility has guards, entrances that require pass keys, security cameras, etc. We are to believe that with million dollar equipment, sensitive records and research, they have no security in place? How does Wells plausibly fake a complete invasion by Eiling's men to cover up that they just walked in and out?
