Rewatched the RF vs Flash showdown, was Barry starting to match RF's speed?

I am referring FYI to the fight between RF vs Flash/Firestorm/Arrow.

As the fight went to the roof of the building, did it look like Barry was starting to match\exceed RF a bit? he did seem to race ahead then stop and set RF up to be blasted by Firestorm.

Now in the season finale when Barry time warped back to the present, RF started pounding him, however I can attribute that to the fact that Barry was undoubtedly feeling a bit energy drained from the time warps and RF was just plain furious.

Still I think Season 1's finale is when the final barriers to Barry's pwoers began to crumble.

It is a debatable point to be sure, though I myself think not. From his initial 700mph ceiling Barry was noted as getting steadily faster throughout the series, but it was a revealed plot point that Thawne was ecretly supercharging himself via external batteries and this was therefore the reason Barry could not hope to match him.

Honestly it is hard to judge your observations as as you note yourself there are so many variables in a fight like this - for example just how fast is Reverse-Flash anyway? In the comics it is (probobly) lightspeed-plus at his maximum effort, the television series though doesn't appear to be aiming for such an extreme, the occasion where Barry first time-travels for example was supposed to be his hitting super-sonic(?) speeds as he circles the City, a speed/feat which made little sense because of such a low threshold. Another point of consieration has to be the knowledge that The Reverse-Flash is from a future where he was rival to an older version of Barry, we know our young Barry has roughly a decade to go before reaching that age, and so we can be sure he is still a fair way from reaching his potential in terms of top speed and mastery of his craft. Hence Thawne becoming his advisor throughout the first half of the series and the sure knowledge that Thawne nows far more about the Speed-force, its potential, how to access parallel earth, and the secrets of time travel.

He IS Barrys natural superior, at the moment that is.

And regarding the nature of 'Zoom', I wonder if this is Eddie Thawne coming back from his presumed death to fullfill the needs of destiny... given Eddie was Eobard's much coveted ancestor it does seem quite plausible that Eobard's fascination with him was tied to his knowledge Eddie would be the first incarnation of the 'Reverse-Flash', Eobard's travelling back in time would have altered events slightly but as with the future/New Flash paradox time itself would ensure this first 'Reverse-Flash' comes into being just as it ensured The Flash did.

Well, its a theory! I felt with all the attention he got Eddie had to have far more to him than just being the deus ex machina that helps defeat The Reverse-Flash...
