Instantly unlikable that was his function. Yet he seemed to becomes a swift victim to heavy rewriting as the producers changed directions constantly and for all the world appeared to be making the show up as they went along. As such the character was something that just appeared in Barry's crime-lab one day, made his life difficult briefly, and by even mid-season stopped making much sense.
