I am also aggravated by the inconsistency but I LOVE how Tom Cavanaugh interprets and plays RF. He portrays the unbalanced nature of Thawne yet adds a certain amount of menace that was missing from Matt Letscher's version.

Agreed. Cavanaugh does great as RF.

I think though that the writers have really set up a situation where RF simply cannot NOT exist.

Flash and RF are linked, one's origins are tied to the other and vice versa. Despite Eddie killing himself in season 1 and RF being erased, the time storm that erupted was destroyed and historical changes may not have been completed.

But what if....time altered itself in away so that someone else is now the linear ancestor of RF now instead of Eddie?

Or thanks to the Legends breaking time, Eddie could be an anachronism somewhere and that was long as he exists so does RF.

Also being from the future, it is likely that RF knew all this was going to happen and that he would be reborn in some capacity. In the comics during Blackest Night and Flash Rebirth didn't RF indicate that he knew this was all coming? Could be the same thing with the TV show.

Also RF knows that while he wants the Flash dead, he also knows that their encounters have happened and thus must happen.

or the writers just don't know what they are doing. ;\)
