    Quote:
Morrison spoke about their role in the book, explaining, “I want to play the Guardians and the whole idea of the Green Lanterns as not law as we understand it…. the Guardians have often been played as out of touch, geriatric characters, but we want to play them actually as these beings that have been around since the dawn of the universe. They have an intrinsic understanding of what is right, in the sense of what leads to greater organization, more freedom, all those things they understand in ways that we don’t.”

Comparing the Guardians’ understanding of the universe to the concept of Dharma, Morrison explained, “They know the rightness in things and the wrongness in things, and they’d like to try and correct it for the evolution of the universe. It’s very different. Yeah, it seems like a police force, and the more we get into the actual philosophy the more alien and weirder it becomes.”

While my opinion of this relaunch is still divided between my keenness to see what Grant Morrison might deliver to us, and my deep doubt over whether Liam Sharpe is suitable as a complementary aid to him, I do like a lot of Morrison's observations and thoughts on the Green Lantern concept, and in particular I do appreciate his aim for reinforcing a more disciplined and morally centered Guardians of the Universe.
It's become the norm in modern times to tear down and dismiss authority figures in comics, arguably Hal Jordan himself became a victim of this bitter attitude in the 1990s too, but every organisation and strata of a society needs authority figures to look to, to guide. This is why Politics will always exist after all. So after decades of watching the Guardians of the Universe be denigrated and diminished as a moral and practical force in the Universe I do look forward to seeing a reversion to the classic model of a more benevolent force watching over us somewhere out there... whether I appreciate Morrison's rationale for rebranding the title as 'The Green Lantern' is another matter however. \(euh\)

Strange times. I should be excited for a Green Lantern relaunch, but... I'm not quite feeling it. So far at least.
