Who is your favorite jungle-based heroine? Mine is Nyoka, the Jung;e Girl . I have read a few Fawcett and Charlton stories that have been reprinted by AC and have also seen a chapter serial. Although some say that Nyoka is based on an Edgar Rice Burroughs story, Nyoka is not a female version of Tarzan. Nyoka could though be a "sister" of Jungle Jim , one of my favorite adventurers originally published as a King Feature comic strip. As such, Nyoka is not dressed in animal skins and can have adventures in the jungle or in other parts of the world without stretching the plots. On the other hand, my next favorite jungle heroine is Sheena.

They are all of them grand, but if I have to choose just one, I go with Bill Black's take on that type of heroine -- Tara of the Dark Continent.

She eventually became part of Femforce and even got some superpowers to become a giant, but in the beginning Tara was a smart and savvy woman who ended up on a an island which was as mysterious as it was rich in story lines. One of Bill Black's earliest creations, she was always a woman in command and despite the AC books tendency to trade on the purely sexual aspects of their stars, Tara mostly seemed to elevate above that treatment -- most of the time.
