I received some happiness in the mail recently: 5 war books (4 DC and 1 Marvel). The books include the following: Our Fighting Forces #22 (DC), Our Army at War: Sgt. Rock #230-231 (DC), Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos #86 (Marvel), and Star Spangled War Stories #27 (DC). The Star Spangled War Stories and #230 of Sgt. Rock are in poor condition, but I only paid $2 for each of them (in fact, I only paid $10.50 for the whole lot). If I can find some pictures on-line, I'll post them later. I just wanted to share my good fortune. The mail delivery made me very happy today!
P.S.--I found pics on-line. So I added them. The two damaged comics have quite a bit of cover damage, but the interiors are in good shape. I purchased these as reader copies anyway, but I couldn't be happier with what I got. Two issues have Ross Andru art (I remember him from Spider-Man in my youth): Our Fighting Forces and Star Spangled War Stories. I look forward to reading these soon!
DC war comics from the 70s take me back to a place that's a bit unique in my comic collecting history. I was always a Marvel guy and a superhero guy, but some of my earliest comics were DC war comics. They were so different from what I would collect. DC art was different from Marvel house style, they were war stories, and I don't remember specific characters from them. But I have such nostalgia for them. I haven't revisited them often but when I do, those old childhood feelings come back.
BTW, great deal on those books. Just getting a good story and artwork for 2 bucks is well worth it!
