Good one. I always think of Roy with his 70s hairstyle.

Same here.  I think he still has that hairdo.

My favourite stuff from Roy was Savage Sword of Conan. It really suited his overly verbose, descriptive skills with less emphasis on dialogue (which never struck me as one of his strengths). Most importantly, he had a great love for the character and knew when to use the original REH prose to build atmosphere. Roy basically built the sword and sorcerey comic genre.
Roy loved Conan so much that he wrote a "what if" where Conan slept with Roy's wife. That's dedication.

I'll say!  That's kind of like your wife writing a story where you get to sleep with Marilyn Monroe!

Among Conan fans, Roy is pretty much the only writer who "got" the source material.

Thomas' love of the work definitely helped him overcome his shortcomings.  I like that he brought Howard and Lovecraft into the Marvel Universe, even though I'm really not a fan of their works.  I just think it's neat.  He's like one of us who made it.

His other stuff was hit or miss for me, like his avengers which could be great at times. Roy always struck me as more of an editor or idea man, who had a great love of continuity and comics history.

If you took away the "continuity" part, you could be talking about Stan.  I always felt his dialogue tried to emulate Stan, which I'm sure was more of a choice by Thomas than a mandate by Lee, but I'm sure Stan didn't mind.
