I thought that wasn’t very iron like.
In the movies it’s properly articulated but maybe that is only in the movies?

I don't think it was intended to look like iron, so much as ethereal.

Some of Dave and Bob's stuff where they drive home that, for example, even with several coatings of some dulling chemical to tone down its shinyness for cameras, it still looked too shiny for the cameras. I think the vibe they were going for for a long time was the sort of ethereal look that Silver Surfer had in the movies. In other words, Iron Man was supposed to look like a high-tech angel.

Later, Marvel started to want him to look like a gritty high-tech knight. The shinyness was de-emphasized massively, and you started to see articulation.

I don't think looking like iron has ever been a priority. Looking like an angel was the priority, then looking like a gritty knight, depending on the era.
