The only offshoot of Iron Man who has ever interested me was Ironheart, because she's also a super-genius inventor.

To me, there's something about an intellectually ordinary character in power-armor that just doesn't work. The result is someone who is no more or less powerful than the armor they are wearing.

If the situation requires super-genius intellect, they are screwed. If the situation doesn't require super-genius intellect, then the armor is doing all the work and would be just as effective as a drone.

So there's nothing heroic about an intellectually ordinary character in the armor, since they bring nothing to the table and are just along for the ride.

Iron Man is a super-genius whose armor keeps him alive long enough to use his brain to defeat foes orders of magnitude more powerful than the armor.

Ironheart is a super-genius whose armor keeps her alive long enough to use her brain to defeat foes orders of magnitude more powerful than the armor.

Rescue is a passenger who can defeat whatever foes her armor outpowers, and not one iota beyond that. If she faces a foe even one-percent more powerful than her armor, she dies.

Interesting..

I personally don't feel that intellectual capacity is the only characteristic that can elevate (or differentiate) a character over just someone wearing the suit.

For example,I feel that Frank Castle makes for an absolutely ruthless Warmachine because of his single mimded focus and ruthlessness.

RIRI never impressed, me. Her intelligence just make her come of as a female tony stark clone to me. She fits right in with Marvels agenda to supplant it's powerful male archetypes with female versions.

Rhodey was always interesting to me. While he lacked Stark's genius, he exhibited a certain level of resourcefulness, aggression and stubbornness that made him unique. I loved his first encounter with the Mandarin.
