No, the whole point of the story is that Solomon Grundy wants to take Ivo's place as one of the 13 immortals. (Well, not Ivo specifically, but Ivo is volunteering.)

I don't think Grundy would currently be considered an immortal because he's more or less undead, he keeps getting "killed" and he regenerates each time with a slightly different personality. He wants to become immortal in his current form so he can keep his current level of intelligence.
