You are talking about JLA issues 36-41 (or so) and the battle with Maggedon. It was title World War III but in the end, an army of supers faced off against this thing and Aztek gave his life to stop the thing so the "war" never actually happened because they were successful in stopping Mageddon. I guess since this one actually happened and happened on Earth, it is now considered the "official" WWIII. Who knows.
