Reply Subj: Was Doctor Destiny In The Sandman The Same As the Justice League Doctor Destiny?

I was looking through the first Sandman trade last Saturday, and was mostly interested in the parts involving Scarecrow and Doctor Destiny. Doctor Destiny was kind of a psychopath in this it seemed. I don't know much about the character, but was he always murderous, or was this just something done for the Sandman series? Were him and the JLA always adversaries? Thanks.

Yes, he was always murderous, but not always horrifying, if that makes sense. Bear in mind that there are different kinds of comic-book murderousness.... In many of the silver JLA stories, the villains would be launching attacks at the heroes that were intended to maim or kill them, but that never succeeded, and still seemed dangerous, but not at all scary. If you found any number of (pre-Sandman) Doctor Destiny stories, you'd have a harder time picturing that guy controlling people and making them all kill each other like in the diner scene than you'd have picturing him driving a giant catapult down the street launching giant yellow pies at Green Lantern and robbing banks (with actual canvas bags with $ signs on them).
