Looking back on the League's history is Batman-as-leader a recent development of his role or was it a feature even back in the 60s,70s & 80s?
I know he was a key figure in the Giffen/DeMatteis run, and I think he was in the latter end of the Detroit based version as well but before then...? How dominant a player was he?

The League always had a rotating membership, and no real leader until the Bronze Age. Then it was Superman, until Zatanna was elected permanent chairperson, I think.
After the Martian Invasion, it was Aquaman until he left, and Martian Manhunter took over until Batman returned after Crisis On Infinite Earths. He remained in charge except when Superman would join the League.
