I loved it. But it did raise some questions for me about Geoff Johns' writing trajectory in recent years, particularly the last two.
With his increased focus on unsavoury characters and trying to hold them up as misunderstood heroes Johns' writing has taken a decline in my view, the ideas are no longer novel, the characterisation only occasionally sparkles, there is nothing in the New 52 to revamp and so he has floundered in my view.
And yet, in amidst the storm he can produce the excellent Aquaman, and the last two issue of Justice League buck the level of expectation by being rather uplifting and featuring genuine emotion and humanity.
So what is happening here? Is the writer who writes Aquaman and this Metal Men issue the same one who churns out the bleak amorality of Forever Evil and Simon Baz? Or is it, as I now wonder, the case that he is being forced to write in a style that is wholly dark in tone and lacking in any of the warmth and positivity that marked his JSA and Flash work?
Regardless of that though The Metal Men are an oddly heroic and childlike choice to bring in for Forever Evil, I loved it, but is this Johns making a statement perhaps...?
