I believe it was during his early Post Crisis DC continuity appearances that Captain X was established as being the grandfather to Firestorm, and I believe he was killed off in modern times by an old WW2 era Russian super-character. I'm not as familiar with the more recent changes to old DC continuity, so it is possible they had Jack become Capt. X in a previous life.

I don't recall the link to Captain X, but the claim was made that Jack was a reincarnation of Rosa, Master Spy from Men at War #17.
