A mini-series about setting up the replacing of Dr. Fate and along the way we get one-shots replacing 2 more golden-age magical characters for no real reason. Why not use the opportunity and tell us a story with the original characters, maybe restoring them to glory? Or to relate a story about them and Fate from the past? But, instead we got just more of the same old same old. Bleh. Was tempted to get the Black Alice one since she is an actual original character.

He's come back since then, and killed off again I believe.

As was Doctor 13, he's back and he has no powers at all.

Mystical heroes, especially ones with exterior power devices, tend to come back from the dead more easily than others. And their deaths were a bit weak, as they were both cannon fodder deaths for the most part, more to give a story more punch but not of any service to the characters themselves.
Even so, it gets at what I was talking about, what they gave us were two more replacement/legacy heroes, 1)something we now have a ton of already and 2) the whole point of this mini is setting up a mystical legacy character of a golden-age mystical hero, and so we have 2 one-shots focusing on replacements for 2 other golden-age mystical heroes? And in honoring them, it shucks the whole visual tradition of both of those heroes (the Chandu-esque turban and tux outfit as opposed to the top hat and turban Mandrake influence) in favor of a more superhero styled look which was one thing that made Dr. Fate a bit unique in the realm of superhero magicians.
I'd have much rather they did something unique and tell us a times-past story with the original characters and keeping true to those characters without half-baked darkening retcons to make them edgy. You know, require the writers to do a little research and write them actually in-character.
