I know this will brand me as hopelessly geeky, but the compression of the JSA with the A*S is one of my pet peeves.

I think they tend to do this because the number of WWII characters get less and less as the years go by. It probably seems silly for the powers that be at DC to try and keep track of the various teams that operated during the war (JSA, ASS, FF, YAS, etc, so they tend to lump them altogether.
