You get a new iteration of a terrific villain.
You get to focus on one character - Mr Terrific is the perfect choice for a large number of reasons - and while he has never been my favorite he is so well depicted here that you are almost instantly invested in him.

You still get to see the team (and I think this is about the maximum number of folks a JSA story should have)in operation with everyone getting a moment to shine.

I am still on the bubble with Willingham but this series has my complete buy in

It was a pretty good starting point, but the pacing seemed kind of weird and as someone who did not read Checkmate, I wish Kobra's background had been filled out a little more.

Kobra was such a pivotal role in the "greying" of Al's character and Al response was so pivotal to Kobra that it didn't bother me. Plus it helped that I read the Kobra Faces of Evil one-shot recently.

Expand on your thoughts about pace if you get a chance. Was it the back and forth between T and K's points of view that felt a touch funky?

Yes, that and jumping around in time and space so much was disorienting. Still, I liked the no-nonsense tone and the urgency in the issue. It felt like something was at stake whereas in the main series, a lot of the drama in the past two years felt like they were just going through the motions.
