Cyclops, Wolverine, Gambit, Nightcrawler, Beast, Rogue, Dazzler.
Base- New York.
I chose Cyclops to be the leader, with Wolverine as deputy. They should be vaguely at odds, but not literally at each other’s throats. I would give Gambit back his vision. I would give Nightcrawler his fencing swords (see the Legends video games), but perhaps give them a “stun” function so he’s not actually trying to eviscerate most foes. I want Beast to be more prominent, but to use his brain more-- give him a backpack with some simple gadgets. I’m not totally keen on Rogue having Sunfire’s powers, but I guess I can deal with it enough to keep her on the team. Dazzler I felt was robbed when she was phased out of the strip in the early 90’s. She needs a new, non-disco outfit. And of course, she keeps an Ipod with her at all times for sound.
Black Panther, Spider-Man, Iceman, Firestar, Hercules, Falcon, Storm.
Focus- Atlantic Coast/beyond. I chose Black Panther because I want to see him back as an Avenger, and he’s never been the leader. Storm can be the co-leader/deputy. I put Spider-Man in because I’d like to keep him as an Avenger, and I want to see him interact with his Amazing Friends. Iceman has never been in a non-X-Team, so I want to see him on a different, non-mutant environment. Firestar has the benefit of having been an Avenger before. I put Falcon back on the team because I want to explore his bird-empathy more and clear up once and for all that he is an educated man (not just an ex-hustler!). I put Hercules on the team to be the super-muscle for the group (not that Spidey is a slouch, but he’s not class 100). I’d also like to explore what interactions, if any, Hercules has had with the African pantheon of gods.
Dr. Strange, Hulk, Sub-Mariner, Silver Surfer, Pulsar, Sentry.
After “Planet Hulk”, the Hulk has more familiarity with off-planet adventure. They could be a troubleshooting team on a pan-galactic scale. Their focus would be the highest level worldwide threats, including magic, and aliens. Dr. Strange would have access to different dimensions, and Silver Surfer has access to different galaxies. The Sentry would be a great asset, pitting him against tremendously powerful foes. Pulsar (Monica) would really have a chance to kick butt and use her powers to their maximum potential.
War Machine, Cage, Wonder Man, Thor, She-Hulk, Ms. Marvel, Angel.
Focus- Pacific Coast/beyond. I see the Angel setting up a new team, headquartered on the West coast but focused on both domestic and international problems. Cage wants to be more proactive- they can go to different countries, bust up drug cartels, attack regional warlords in places like Central America and Southeast Asia. I would bring back Donald Blake, and have him be a physician with “Doctors Without Boundaries” or a similar organization. Ms. Marvel can use her CIA contacts to find intel on hotspots of criminal activities.
Cannonball, Mirage, Magik, Wolfsbane, Warlock, Sunspot, Karma.
With the 198 issue, worldwide “mutant rights” issues are drastically downscaled. Still, the world could use more super-teams in general. I want to see the “original” New Mutants back together again as a team- I’d base them in Colorado and Rio de Janiero (Magik’s teleportation would allow this). I’d give Mirage her desire/fear illusions power back, and the psychic arrows. If she maintains good relations with SHIELD, they could provide some tech assistance. Of course, Magik could teleport them just about anywhere they needed to go—and Warlock can transform himself into any vehicle.
Bishop, Cloak, Dagger, Psylocke, Shadowcat, Colossus, White Queen.
I would like to see this team investigate supernatural phenomenon, like the “X-Files”- some threats might truly be otherworldly (vampires, demons, bugbears, kobolds, etc.), and others might not. Bishop would be the leader, and I’d like to see his militant take on supernatural monsters. Shadowcat and White Queen would make for good ongoing tension. Cloak and Dagger haven’t often had to function in a larger team—much less with fellow mutants, so this is a good chance to explore that, as well as the quasi-mystical nature of their powers. Colossus makes for great muscle.
