I have an INCREDIBLE HULK issue where he does nothing but whine about not wanting to return to the coldness of space and is promptly defeated by the Banner controlled Hulk, in one of the last issues of Bill Mantlo's Banner controlled Hulk stories, just before the Mindless Hulk returned.

So Zzax being promptly defeated really isn't anything surprising, actually. That issue of POWER MAN was a good issue, no doubt about it, but every character fights characters differently.

His very first appearance established that he could be dissipated with some wire and some water, which is how Hawkeye's beaten him with ease at least twice. Zzzaxx always did quite well against the Savage Hulk, of course, or agains a hero who doesn't already know how to defeat him...but his track record against intelligent heroes other than Cage, who didn't know him, is pretty awful.
