Amazingly, the third Thor movie will far surpass the first Justice League movie financially. Thor: Ragnarok now looks like it'll earn about $305 million domestically and about $845 million world-wide. Justice League is heading toward a $240 million domestic gross and world-wide total of $660 million. Unfortunately for Warner Bros., Justice League is one of the most expensive movies ever made given extensive reshoots and spending over $100 million in marketing costs. It'll need to make about $800 million to break even.

The best I can say is, the Justice League film has helped maintain the visibility of Wonder Woman and has drawn more attention to Aquaman. I think an Aquaman film could succeed if DC understands who he is for film-goers: given his look, he's DC's Thor; i.e., he's the heart-throb for female fans. His particular powers don't matter. Female fans swoon over him the way they swoon over Hemsworth.

The other MCU movies this year, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Spider-Man: Homecoming made $863 million and $880 million world-wide, respectively. DC's one unabashed success, Wonder Woman, made more money than any of the MCU movies domestically this year with $412 million, but its world-wide gross of $822 million will be less than all three MCU movies in 2017.

Her next film will probably sell even more. She's the breakaway star of DC, as Iron Man was for Marvel. Nobody (except me) expected Iron Man to be such a hit. (To me it was obvious that a genuinely powerful super-hero who could actually exist in the real world would clean up at the box office. Talk about your power fantasy! You have the armor, and the genius intellect, and the billionaire wealth, all of which are in reach of a Type A personality in our real world, if not right this minute, then, at most, 20 years from now.)

Justice League will likely end up making the least amount of money of any DCEU film so far, even less than Man of Steel, which made $291 million domestically and $668 million world-wide.
