Right - but Marvel may still have been in on it. What are rules when there's a writer the higher-ups want writing? He didn't break the law. He broke policy. Who makes policy? The higher-ups.

You'll notice Marvel hasn't treated him like a dirty rule breaker. They're treating him more like someone they owe something to.




I think it may have been a deliberate attempt trick the audience. Manga was big in the late 90/early 2000s.

I certainly remember Manga fans being larger in number, and looking down on me for liking American comics.

There was a large use of faux-manga art at the time. It has been a while, but I seem to remember Wolverine: Soultaker as having that kind of look.

Is it Marvel knew... or possibly encouraged it... to bring in readers of Manga?

I don't know, but I really would not be surprised. Marvel MAY not have had an issue, because they knew.

End of the day, he more than likely would have needed his real name on the check to cash it.
