Nope. That wasn't how they were formed. They formed fighting Terrax.

If you had read New Warriors #1 you would see them fighting Terrax is what brought them together. Night Thrasher was trying to recruit .Nova, Marvel Boy and Firestar when Terrax attacked and Namorita and Speedball showed up at the fight

If you had read Thor #411-412 you would see the team had already been formed when fighting Juggernaut.

The Thor issues came out first. But New Warriors #1 was set before the Thor story.
