I mean, come on, guys. I'm as jaded as any of you. Hating this and that and those other things over there. Fie upon it all. Pfui and ptooey.
But War of the Realms #1 is epic. Thirty-three years later, Marvel is finally publishing something of similar stature to Crisis on Infinite Earths.
Not convinced. Reserving judgement. Decent premiere. Awesome art obviously helps.
Quote:Sure, I'm biased. Norse cosmology is my jam. But this thing is tremendous.
Quote:It opens with a map, as all high fantasy must, after Tolkien. The influence of Lord of the Rings is evident. "This is the story of those ten realms.
And Conan stories, of course, before that!
Quote:And the one mighty war that ravaged them all." Aaron is right in our faces with it.
The weight of aaalll those Thor preamble stories is not effectively conveyed (yet). Thor and Jane have both been lax in sharing the building losses and crises happening in the 10 Realms. Heck, we have the Asgardian nation squatting in a brownstone in NYC.
Quote:Each realm has its own symbol. That's how I know a video game is coming. Players of the game will be clicking on those symbols. I guarantee it.
Ah! Nice catch with that. Never realized what those symbols meant.
Quote:There's even a theme song by someone named Jimmy Urine (yuck) at the marvel.com/waroftherealms web page.
Thanks for link. Will check it out later...
Quote:"Most of the Asgardians have relocated to a brownstone in the Bronx." I wonder how many Asgardians there are. Is the brownstone magical? Much more space inside it than outside it?
That magical tesseract MU trope is as good a No-Prize as any w/o exposition.
Quote:"Odin sits alone atop his crumbling throne, longing for a sleep that will not come." Is that why he's been acting so weird? Insomnia? We know from the Silver and Bronze Ages how important the Odinsleep is. Does he lose his mind without it?
Vs. those assassins he was pathetic. (Pretty much par for the course since he banned Asgardia.
Quote:The horned helmet has to go. I mean, seriously. But it's a good visual cue. One look, and we're thinking, "Odin isn't right in the head." Kirby helmets were more over the top but they didn't look Bullwinkle-ish.
Hey Rocky, watch me pull an Alfheimian Rabbit out of my hat!"
Quote:Meanwhile, Thor and Doctor Strange must compete in all things, right up to and including which of the two has the coolest dog.
Quote:I didn't grasp that Loki was actually Malekith until Freyja said so. It's that panel where the Loki disguise is being shed. Thor looks off into the distance instead of at Loki. I guess Thor was looking at the Frost Giants. But by not looking at Loki he threw me off.
Huh? Say what?!
Quote:Thor's arsenal of magic hammers is impressive.
Hated how he whipped up those hammers seemingly out of nowhere on the Thorboat. [EDIT: Can he magically call and alter the trajectories of them all, too? That seems better to be a unique quality/enchantment of Mjolnir, imo, the way Thor has been going thru these factory line substitutes.]
Quote:Spider-Man was hilarious. So was Iron Man.
Quote:Cap had a great moment. (Shield to Malekith's head.)
Quote:I'm becoming a big Freyja fan.
She's reaped the benefits of female empowerment going on at Marvel since Lady Thor(Jane) showed up.
Quote:Laufey made a big mistake, I think, by eating Loki. We'll see.
Yeah, Loki will be fine. Laufey is trickster intolerant.
Quote:"Is that all you've got, Malekith? SEND MORE GIANTS!" Very MCU Thor-ish. I approve.
Decent entry into the fray. Shades of his smackdown superiority showing up in Wakanda in the Infinity War movie.
Quote:This is going to be a fun ride. And not a Bendis, Millar, or Fraction in sight. Sweet.
Hmm... Well, it's definitely better than that Sucky Celestial situational crisis that Aaron premiered in the Avengers book. The gimmick marketing cashcow heroes lineup will have to be expanded. Amora will have to flip ASAP. And the opening black page with quote as a themed first sight grab is getting peevy and has to go.
