I like New Warriors. I'm currently up to issue 40 of the original series. I find Nicieza to be hit or miss, but I think that mostly has to do with the characters he's writing. While I'm not a fan of X-Force or Cable, I do like NW, and Nomad wasn't bad.

The characters in NW were much more appealing to me than the ones in the mutant books, whose popularity I never got. I've been a fan of Nova since the 70's and was thrilled when he came back. Namorita was a welcomed addition to the team and Night Thrasher was a cool and capable leader. Justice and Firestar were already known to me, which made getting to know the team easier. And Speedball was fun. I felt that Nicieza, at times, forgot that Rage was supposed to be a 12 year old, while at other times he used it to great effect. Or maybe that was in the Avengers book. Sometimes all these stories get jumbled together.

I think Rage was 14 by the time he was in the New Warriors...I'm pretty sure they say that a couple times.

There's a subplot late in Nicieza's run about Rage befriending a single mother but he's worried she wants a relationship because emotionally he's only 14 (of course by that time he had already lost his Grandma and snapped the neck of the guy behind it). Nicieza's last issue hinted that Rage's deadbeat father was watching him from a window and was about to come back into his life but the next writer wrote out Rage and Night Thrasher immediately (I don't want to make the claim that it was racist...but with Silhouette leaving a few issues before this, it effectively meant that all the black members were off the team for the rest of the series).

Nicieza made Rage a lot more bearable than he had been in Avengers. His friendship with Speedball was a fun part of the book as everyone else on the team but Firestar was a bit older than Speedball.

One of my favorite New Warriors moments was the ending of New Warriors 39 where Dwayne and Elvin honor Edna Staples's memory at the Eiffel Tower.
