I'd have to guess songs that were in movies?
American Woman was in Austin Powers, and Iris was in City of Angels.

I did have this idea in my head, and was wondering if you'd throw in Someday I Suppose by the Mighty Mighty Bosstones from Clueless. But I had to wiki the songs here to find the soundtrack songs.

No, the answer was Otis Redding.

Runnin' Blue by the Doors is a tribute to him and starts with the lines

Poor Otis, dead and gone
Left me here to sing his song
Pretty little girl with the red dress on
Poor Otis, dead and gone

Also on the 60's list I played Otis Redding singing Mr. Pitiful

Then in the 70's I played Sly and the Family Stone "I Can't Turn You Loose" which was first recorded by Otis Redding

And on the 90's list I played Black Crowes Hard to Handle which was also originally an Otis Redding song (As you noticed).
