    Quote:
That was when Marvel was at its zenith. We had the original Transformers comics, Marvel 2099, New Universe, Heroes Reborn/Return, Age of Apocalypse, Days of Future Past, Secret Wars (the original), Secret Wars II, (mostly) great artists (who later quit and formed Image), and more. I also like the Avengers' traditional comic costumes more than their's carried over from the movies, but I understand it needs to be done to draw in new readers. Also, Spider-Man still had a long-standing secret ID and marriage with MJ status-quo, which was ruined by Civil Wars later on.

I was 19 in 1980. The 80s and 90s were for me my 20s and 30s. I was more demanding in those years than I had been before, and unfortunately that meant I was more easily disappointed. I had a strong tendency to prefer independents to Marvel or DC, and to prefer DC (especially Vertigo) to Marvel. I also went long periods without reading comics at all.

I guess I have an alternate viewpoint to set beside your own, Rodimus. In my opinion the 80s and 90s were the best time, not for Marvel, but for DC and the independents. Really when I say DC what I mean is Vertigo. There was real experimentation going on, and it seemed actually to matter, as if maybe the industry would turn away from the superhero model and embrace unlimited flexibility. But none of it ever really caught on, except in isolated incidences, like the greatest comic of all time, Vertigo's Sandman.
