He also uses a whip, and can strike his trademark Z into a surface with either sword or whip. I assume if his enemies are coming at him with swords he would want one of his own to block them, even if he doesn't intend on killing them.

I don't think he does intentionally but of course being a typical Hollywood movie the villains are dispatched during the final battle, and I'm sure Zorro can be held partially responsible. I'd have to watch again but I don't remember him running his foe through with the sword or anything like that.
