I confess I never warmed to the black costume. I especially disliked it when it was revealed to be alive. When the symbiote moved to another host and we got Venom, I wasn't a fan of that either. How about you?

There was an opportunity in the 80s and 90s that was never explored. Maybe no one thought of it. Instead of Venom, we could have had (via cloning) an actual villainous Peter Parker who would have been the good Peter Parker's nemesis. "Dark Spider" (for want of a better name) could have worn the black costume. That, I would have liked. If I were in charge, I would have used the Dark Spider story line to finally reveal Peter's secret identity to Aunt May. (Dark Spider would reveal it, indifferent to any heart attack Aunt May might suffer.) Dark Spider would also have formed an alliance with the Green Goblin and in fact would have taken Norman Osborn as a mentor, sort of an evil Uncle Ben. Do you agree that this was a missed opportunity? Would you have enjoyed a story line like this one?

I like the black costume only when it's used as part of the symbiote storyline. I think the cartoon and movie actually got it better by having the costume effect Spider-Man's personality. Still, I loved that it was alive and that it freaked Spidey out so much. The story when Reed Richards analyzed it and determined that it was organic and sentient was a shocker even though I pretty much knew what was going on at the time. I liked when Spidey got rid of the suit in Spectacular 100 and Web 1 and I liked Venom, but I remember being very confused by ASM 300. I didn't like Venom's origin being shoehorned into Spidey's chronology. Also, once Venom wore the black and white, there was no real reason for Spidey to wear the suit again, especially given MJ's reaction to it.

I remember missing ASM 252 on the stands, but I got it from the Cookie Crisp give away. All the black costume issues were hot sellers back then.

I think your story would've worked great, but I'd give the Peter Parker clone some of Peter's humanity. He could reveal Spidey's ID and cause Aunt May's heart attack, but I can't see him not caring. He's got some PP in him after all. There could've been great pathos in this story.

Finally, I'd like to comment on Charles Vess. I wouldn't say I'm a great fan of his. For me, he can be pretty hit or miss. But that image PPP picked, a poster insert from Spectacular Spider-Man 189, is fantastic! That's classic Vess. I think he drew Hobgoblin better than any other character.
