These two for sure were the ultimate pure superhero artists of the 80s. They've done countless classic comics between them. Who is your favorite of the two?

I love them both. But I give edge to. . .BYRNE!

It's hard to say why exactly. There was just something about Byrne's prime work that was so elegant, compelling, and satisfying. It just "flowed" for lack of a more descriptive term.

Perez was sheer expert as well and pure fun and amazement, but somehow didn't *quite* reach that same level of gravitas in my eyes.

I love them both, but I'd vote for Perez for three reasons:

1. Byrne was a bit notorious for being lazy with backgrounds. And even in his iconic Fantastic Four work, he's guilty of this. They are both exceptional visual story tellers, but I think Perez put more detail into his work.
2. When Perez did his group shots, he would have characters with closer relationships grouped together - as they would if these were real people posing for a photo. So I feel like he understood the characters inside out and was deeply familiar with their histories and continuities. I appreciate that in an artist.
3. Byrne had this annoying habit of writing/drawing himself in the comics. His ego really got the better of his creative instincts sometimes, and it took away my suspension of disbelief entirely when it happened. Perez never broke his professionalism, to my knowledge.

Even still, it's close. One compliment I'll pay to Byrne is he always drew each character with a unique posture that matched their personalities. Which really made his characters realistic.

And a lean, silent figure slowly fades into the gathering darkness, aware at last that in this world, with great power there must also come -- great responsibility!
