    As a boy in the 80's I collected the California Raisins toys you could get from Hardee's. And there was a cartoon.

I didn't own any toys but I may have watched the cartoon. What I remember for sure are the TV commercials - which I actually liked, as back then I wasn't anywhere near as anti-commercial as I am now.

    As a kid I loved them but as an adult I wonder how they got away with marketing these guys. They seem like racist caricatures.

Remember the Fat Albert cartoon? It started in 1972 but continued all the way to 1984 with 110 episodes and four specials, according to Wikipedia. Talk about your caricatures! Yet I liked it. I'm really amazed that I did. I wouldn't watch it for five seconds nowadays.

It was certainly a different time. Today, we might still see this sort of caricature, but only on a highly cynical cartoon like South Park.
