As a boy in the 80's I collected the California Raisins toys you could get from Hardee's. And there was a cartoon.
As a kid I loved them but as an adult I wonder how they got away with marketing these guys. They seem like racist caricatures.
I remember the initial "I Heard It Through The Grape Vine" commercial being very popular, with white kids and black kids when I was in high school. I never thought of the designs as stereotypes, and black kids appreciating the commercial doesn't mean it wasn't so, but I know almost everyone thought they were pretty cool at first.
