Ridiculously, I haven't read any Dreadstar comics. I really should have. I think I vaguely recall having heard that if you've read Starlin's Marvel work, then you're not missing a whole lot by skipping Dreadstar. However, my older and hopefully wiser self is highly skeptical that such a claim would actually be legitimate. Did you read any of the Dreadstar comics?
Wikipedia Dreadstar article

Bonus question: Do you think we'll ever see the rumored Dreadstar TV series?

I remember Dreadstar being a pretty hot item(of course, Marvel Graphic Novels were a very hot item) back in the 80's but, like you, I never checked it out. I found Starlin's concept of Universal religion to be interesting in his Marvel Cosmic work and I see from Wikipedia that it was a theme in Dreadstar as well. I'd bet it would be worth a read.
