Yep, that is Beast Wars alright. Season 1, ep 1.

The CGI was nice but a bit rough in some places but they also laid the seeds for an interesting story arc.

What planet were they on? What time period? It sure looked like Earth but the continents weren't separated into 7 yet and there were 2 moons.

Answers would come as the series progressed, though not all were officially answered by the series end such as the origins of the Vok and origins of Tarantulas.

I liked Beast Wars and the continuation Beast Machines. I think Beast Wars had more characters but Beast Machines had the better plot and look.

Beast machines CGI was the next step from BW's CGI. Nice rendering, shadows and explosions.

The storyline though at times I thought was getting a little too spiritual and mystic for robots in disguise. The only times the old cartoon did that was when Rodimus entered the Matrix for answers about the Quintessons and when Optimus briefly merged with Vector Sigma.

Also I had hoped BM would have given some answers about how the Great War ended and who had survived instead of wiping all TF history.

Also no explanation for how Megatron got back to Cybertron.
