Why am I cringing at this idea?

Well, I cringe at all remakes until I see what they look like. This one is about a woman instead of a man and sounds like it will make the hero a little (maybe a lot) more irresponsible than the original was. The irresponsibility might bug me. The gender won't.

Especially considering they wanted the original to segue into a female hero back in the day.

I'm hoping there is more to her character than what they mention. At least the original was a teacher.

My cringe doesn't come from it being a woman as I do recall the original series ending with a woman taking Ralph's place after he screwed up so bad that the aliens stripped him of the suit.

No I just cringe at yet another 80's property getting the reboot treatment. At least with the impending Knight Rider Heroes project I've read about, Hasselhoff is more directly involved and the 2008 series is disregarded.

As to the new heroine being irresponsible, well Ralphs' problem as I recall was that he always felt he was in way over his head, had confidence issues with the usage of his powers and of course he lost the manual, TWICE!

So what is this new person's excuse?

I mean seriously if someone be they human or alien bestowed powers on me I would endeavor to take as much time as needed to read all manuals and help files so that I knew what I could do even if I still needed practice.

Case in point, one of the GLC spectrum rings chooses me as its wielder. You better believe that I'd hope it to be a green or blue one (I'd look awful in a star sapphire suit) and you better believe I'd be getting all the instruction I could both from an experienced user and also asking the ring's own A.I.

Also an example of a character that gained alien powers and not the instructions that slightly predates Greatest American Hero would be Richard Ryder.
