For female maybe Gillian Anderson for her role as Dana Scully in The X-Files. She was smart and capable, rarely used as a damsel in distress often actually saving the male lead. She was attractive and sexy but never really a bombshell. A great character.

I agree with that! She was very attractive but she never seemed like a bimbo who was miscast. They always made her out to be very intelligent but not in an annoying maverick super genius sort of way (Dr. House!) but in a highly trained by the book sort of way.

I feel like she was a great character who was often misused in the later seasons. The fact that she had 2 children born out of some sort of medical rape is abominable. I feel like X-Files worked because they made the female lead the analytical skeptical one and made the male lead the dreamer who was overly emotional.

Gillian's voice over in the X-Files episode Biogenesis is probably my favorite moment in X-Files.
