During a lot of time, I wrongly believed that Batman Returns, one of my favorite movies, hadn't been a commercial success because some of the French magazines wrongly said that the movie had been censored in the USA.

Actually, it was false (journalists in specialized magazines are not what you might call reliable ... Recently, one of them confused Elijah Price, the character of the Glass movie, with Elijah Wood, the actor)

Warner Bros. was disappointed with the box office run, having made $150 million less than the first film ... but Batman Returns was a commercial success, the third highest-grossing film in America of 1992, and it received positive reviews.

No, the main problem was that McDonald's shut down their Happy Meal promotion for the film because some parents criticized Batman Returns with violence and sexual references that were inappropriate for children despite being rated PG-13.

I think I remember hearing about that.

Also there were the issues parent groups had with Batman Beyond Return of the Joker prior to release so they had to go back and make changes.

Then they would later release the "unrated" version.
