The Spirit of 76 (1990)

Does anyone remember this movie? I had seen the very end of it, I think in a hotel room when I was a kid. I spent years searching for which movie had the final image I remembered before I found it. The final image is a white, sterile future world suddenly repainting itself in colorful polka dots and such.

The premise, which seems fitting for today, is that in the future world of 2176 all records are stored electronically, even the US Declaration of Independence, which unfortunately means they can be accidentally wiped. They are. Some historians decide to use their time machine to travel back to 1776 to get a new copy. But a glitch sends them to 1976 by mistake and they can't tell the difference between the Bicentennial and the original thing. So this movie is less about patriotism and more a 90s stab at 70s culture.

It was written and directed by Lucas Reiner who is the brother of Rob Reiner and son of Carl Reiner, both of whom have parts in the movie. It's also packed full of 70s stars, not only David Cassidy and Leif Garrett who star, but band members from Devo, Redd Kross, The Kipper Kids and Tommy Chong.

I don't remember much about the movie other than Rob Reiner running a self help group where he calls everyone an asshole, and the ending where the time travelers take the colors and free love of the 70s back to the future.

Anyone ever heard of this?

From what I gather, it got really good reviews but just didn't have a chance of success.
